The Smell Test
Genuine leather has a distinct, rich, organic scent — slightly earthy, slightly sweet, and unmistakably natural. PU (polyurethane) and synthetic leather smell like plastic, chemicals, or have no scent at all. This is the quickest and most reliable test: if it smells like a new car or a plastic factory, it is not genuine leather. If it smells warm, organic, and slightly musky — that is real leather.
The Touch Test
Press your finger into the leather surface. Genuine leather will develop tiny wrinkles and creases around your fingertip, like human skin. PU leather will either not wrinkle at all or will create unnatural, uniform patterns. Genuine leather also warms up quickly in your hand — synthetics stay cool.
The Grain Test
Genuine leather has natural, irregular grain patterns. No two square inches are identical — there will be subtle variations in texture, tiny natural marks, and inconsistent pore patterns. PU leather has a perfectly uniform pattern that repeats exactly. If the grain looks too perfect, it is printed, not real.
The Edge Test
Examine the cut edge of the leather (at strap ends or flap edges). Genuine leather has a rough, fibrous edge that looks like suede when cut. PU leather has a fabric backing or a perfectly smooth, plastic-like edge. If you see threads or fabric at the cut edge, it is bonded or synthetic leather.
The Water Test
Place one tiny drop of water on an inconspicuous area. Genuine leather will absorb the water slowly and darken slightly at the spot. PU leather will repel the water — the droplet will sit on the surface without being absorbed. (Test on the inside of a strap or the bottom of the bag to avoid visible marks.)
The Weight Test
Genuine leather has satisfying weight. A medium-sized leather bag should weigh 1.5-3 lbs. PU bags are noticeably lighter. If a bag feels surprisingly light for its size, it is likely synthetic. Quality has weight — this is true for bags, hardware, and materials.
The Price Test
A bag made from genuine full-grain or top-grain leather cannot be sold for $20. The raw materials alone cost more than that. If the price seems too good to be true, the leather is not genuine — or it is the lowest-grade “genuine leather” (which is technically leather dust bonded with adhesive). Expect to pay $60-150 for a quality designer-inspired leather bag.
