Improper storage is the number one cause of bag damage. Bags crushed on closet shelves, hung by their straps, or stacked in piles lose their shape and develop permanent creases. Here is how to store them correctly.
1. Stuff to Maintain Shape
Use acid-free tissue paper, bubble wrap, or dedicated bag shapers inside each bag. The stuffing should be firm enough to hold the shape but not so tight that it stretches the leather. Never use newspaper — ink can transfer.
2. Dust Bags Are Not Optional
Every leather bag should live in a breathable dust bag when not in use. Dust bags protect from light, dust, and accidental scuffs. Cotton or muslin bags are ideal. Never store leather in plastic — it traps moisture and causes mold.
3. Stand Up or Lie Flat — Never Hang
Hanging a bag by its straps stretches and weakens them permanently. Structured bags should stand upright on a shelf. Slouchy bags can lie flat. Use shelf dividers to keep bags properly separated.
4. Chain Straps Need Special Care
Tuck chain straps inside the bag before storing. Left outside, chains can press into the leather and leave permanent indentations. Wrap chains in tissue paper first for extra protection.
5. Climate Control Matters
Store bags in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. High humidity causes mold; excessive dryness causes leather to crack. A closet with silica gel packets for humidity control is ideal.
