Your bag faces different enemies in every season: UV damage in summer, water damage in rainy season, salt stains in winter, and mold in humid climates. Here is your season-by-season protection plan.
Summer: The Sun Is Your Enemy
Direct sunlight fades leather and dries it out, causing cracks. Store bags away from windows. Apply a UV-protectant leather conditioner before summer. Canvas bags can sun-bleach, so rotate them out of direct exposure on beach days.
Rainy Season: Water Is the Silent Killer
Apply a water-repellent spray before the rainy season begins. If your bag gets wet, blot — do not rub — with a dry cloth. Stuff with paper to maintain shape while drying. Never use heat (hairdryer, radiator) to speed drying — it cracks leather.
Winter: Salt and Temperature Shock
Road salt splashed onto leather leaves white stains and corrodes hardware. Wipe bags down after any winter outing. Avoid extreme temperature changes — going from freezing outside to heated indoors can cause leather to crack. Let your bag warm up gradually.
Humidity: Mold Prevention
Store bags with silica gel packets in humid climates. Air out bags monthly — take them out of dust bags and let them breathe for a few hours. Never store in plastic, which traps moisture. A dehumidifier in your closet is a worthwhile investment.
Spring: The Deep Clean Season
Spring is the ideal time for a thorough cleaning and conditioning of all your bags. Wipe down, condition leather, clean hardware, and inspect for any damage that needs repair before peak usage season.
